ABBA: The Movie

Director: Lasse Hallström
1977, Australia-Suedia, 95 min

For many of us in Romania, ABBA: The Movie is the first documentary film we got to see in a cinema, on a big screen. Distributed in the Eastern Bloc at the end of the 1970s, Lasse Hallström’s first broad moviemaking success comes straight out of his work promoting the famous pop quarter and is in fact a hybrid constructed around a loose fictional pretext — a failed, perpetually postponed interview of the band with a local DJ — which allows the director to meander along with the Australian tour of a band at its height of success and fan adulation, in 1977.
