Director Sergei Loznitsa
2015, The Netherlands/Belgium, 73min
Festivals: Toronto
After Maidan, the celebrated Russian and Ukrainian director comes back to fARAD with a film that explores the tensions of the present through the events of a relatively recent past. Twenty-five years ago, a coup attempt organized by the old communist guard in Moscow set up in motion the series of events which eventually led to the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Loznitsa is using archival footage recorded at the pro-Yeltsin protests in Leningrad during that heated and fateful August to meditate on the meaning of revolutions and their long-term effects.
