Director Joshua Oppenheimer
2015, Denmark/Indonesia/Norway/Finland/Great Britain, 99min
Festivals: Venice (Grand Special Jury Prize); nominated for Oscar for Best Documentary
The follow-up to Joshua Oppenheimer’s Oscar-nominated The Act of Killing was also nominated for an Oscar. While the first film focuses on the executioners involved in the Indonesian anti- Communist genocide of the ‘60s, this documentary follows one of the genocide victims in the present. Adi, a small-town optician, is looking for his brother’s killers to confront them and, more importantly, to understand how atrocity becomes not just possible, but accepted by an entire society.
