“It’s not a fashion, it’s a religion,” says one commentator about the pop idol culture in today’s Japan — a mixture of pop culture hysteria with sexual objectification, infantilization, and two-way exploitation through the Internet. Most of the 10,000 idols in Tokyo are teenagers, mostly girls with a loyal fan base consisting of single middle-aged men with little outside social life. Director Kyoko Miyake treats her subject head-on, in an alert, sometimes even dizzying style reminiscent of the visual culture of the Japanese internet.
