Q&A: Pascale Lamche

Few politicians had lives as rich and complicated as Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, the former wife of Nelson Mandela, the anti-Apartheid movement leader and the first truly democratically elected president of South Africa. Her story does not have the simple heroic arc of her former husband’s 27 years of captivity; rather, it meanders from resistance to triumph, then scandals, corruption, and exile — which makes it so much more thrilling and cinematic. Director Pascale Lamche received a direction award at Sundance for this film, in which one of the strongest and most controversial female figures in contemporary Africa defends her reputation and place in history with the help of archival materials rarely seen outside South Africa.
